Dear Diane – Day 44

Dear Diane,

What do you think about leadership?  You must be a pretty good leader, since you’ve been so successful in politics. I’m sure you know how important leadership is for achieving social change.  You might come up with the most brilliant policies in the world, but without your leadership, your policies may never be implemented.

Leadership is important on the international level too.  Canadians know this.  That’s why Canada acts as leader in the international field.  We promote our values abroad when we send peacekeepers to conflict zones, or when we take a stand to protect the environment.  Canada also gives generously to developing nations so that they can start to lift themselves out of poverty and achieve a better standard of living.

We do these things because respect for human rights is a Canadian value.  We believe that every person deserves to live a life in dignity, regardless of who they are or where they live.  But human rights isn’t just an international issue.  We have a national housing crisis, right here in Canada.  This is frankly embarrassing, Diane.  In order to be leader abroad, we need to take action at home.  We need a national housing strategy.  As a leader, I’m sure you understand how important this is.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Condon and the Homelessness is Over! Team

Here are some of your messages we shared with Diane today:

…I work as a Settlement Supervisor with the Tamil Society of Canada.  I deal with homelessness and the waiting list is years and years.  Please, urgent measures and quick action is really needed

…Canada has the opportunity to LEAD!…I hope you find it in yourself to exceed our expectations.  Thank you.

…For God’s sake, make me proud of my country again!
