Dear Diane,
Fortunately, homelessness is an issue that most of us will never personally have to experience. Sure, we grumble about housing prices every so often, but never will we find ourselves without roofs over our heads. Perhaps this is why many of us are apathetic to the issue. It is not that we don’t care, but we simply do not have exposure to homelessness on a daily basis to be reminded of the devastating effects and to be motivated to take action.
But Diane, I can assure you that once you start talking with people who have no home to return to at the end of the day, you will take the homelessness situation in Canada very personally. Simply taking a stroll in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, one of Canada’s most impoverished neighbourhoods, will show you the immensity of the homelessness problem, but speaking with the people will help you understand it. The issues surrounding how they came to be homeless are complex; often, mental illness and addictions are also obstacles that these individuals must work through. A home serves as a physical and emotional refuge and it is difficult to see how these issues can be addressed if they have no safe place from which to start their recovery.
Please take the problem of homelessness personally and support Bill C-304.
Sincerely,
Vania Kim and the Homelessness is Over! Team
Here are some of your messages we shared with Diane today
…in this most beautiful and peaceful country – and city – it is shameful that there is so much hunger and homelessness.
…everyone deserves a home!
…make it happen for those who don’t have a place to live!
