Dear Diane,
As Federal Minister responsible for housing in Canada, I write to you to consider why a national housing strategy is badly needed in this country. Canada is one of the most respected countries in the world and it is our responsibility as fellow Canadians to support one another and to live up to our reputation as one of the best countries in the world. This includes helping fellow Canadians who may not have as much as you and I for example. People who are in unfortunate situations and are socially disadvantaged are just as much Canadian as anyone else. The reality is that these people need as much assistance as they can get and that is why a national housing strategy is one approach in making a difference in their lives. This is a fundamental right as no one deserves to be left out in the cold without any form of accessible housing. As you may know, Canada is the only major country in the world that does not have a national housing strategy. This reality needs to be seriously addressed and cannot wait any longer. I feel that you and your fellow colleagues are in a position to make a significant impact on those who do not have homes and are forced to live outside with nowhere to go. We can formulate ideas and strategies all we want, but unless we put these thoughts into action, no progress will be made.Unless swift action is taken at both provincial and federal levels, increasing numbers of Canadians will be denied their basic right to decent and affordable housing.
This is not only a housing problem because people who are in need are affected in many other ways. These include and are not limited to health, productivity, and well-being as families find it increasingly hard to find money for food, clothing, medicine and other basic necessities.
The time to put an end to homelessness is now! Please provide all the support you can behind Bill C-304 and let’s get the ball rolling!
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Christopher Ahn and the Homelessness is Over! team

…Homelessness leads to crime, addiction and mental health issues. Let’s become leaders again in promoting policies legislation that can end many social injustices.
