Dear Diane – Day 48

Dear Diane,

I’m sure the Conservative Party is already abuzz with this news, but in case you haven’t heard, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff recently made an announcement that his party will develop a national housing strategy before the next federal election. This is important information, Diane! You now know one of your opponent’s political platforms, and your party can use this knowledge to develop an even better campaigning strategy.

After all, the statistics don’t lie. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians are homeless or experiencing unsafe living conditions every day. Even for those Canadians with homes, 1.5 million households in Canada spend more than 30 per cent of their pre-tax income on housing. And, of course, we can’t forget the fact that the costs of homes and rents exceeded inflation every year from 1997 to 2005.

Canada’s lack of a national housing strategy affects EVERYONE – from all backgrounds, social classes, and walks of life. We are STILL the only major country without a national housing strategy. Mr. Ignatieff has heard what Canadians want, and so should you. Pass on the word, Diane! If the Conservative party doesn’t listen to our demands, we may find ourselves with a very different governing party come next election. And correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s probably the last thing you want.

Please support Bill-C304.

Here are some of the messages we shared with Diane today:

Now is the time to ACT. What more evidence do you expect to find?

…we can do much better than what our government has so far offered our poor and homeless…

Please recalibrate your priorities in Ottawa and do something to end this shame.
